Gallery Walls in Kids Rooms

Gallery Walls in Kids Rooms

Who doesn’t love a well put together gallery wall?

I love gallery walls in living areas or hallways, but I think they bring an unexpected sophistication to kids rooms.  I am still plodding along in my girls room, and I am really liking the idea of adding art and whimsy and interest to their room by putting together a gallery wall above their beds.

Of course, they are not just for girls.  Boys can rock some gallery walls, too!  There are also some terrific gender neutral looks in here for you “non-finder-outers” or those with a boy and a girl sharing a room.

You definitely want to make sure when putting together a gallery wall for a child’s room that you keep it light enough to draw their imagination (frame some of their art! maybe throw in some of those cardboard animal heads??) and fun enough to suit a young one’s heart (like this??).  But I still think you should mix some items of age or artistry (like Picasso’s black and white drawings or a vintage painting or two), something to elicit a pause, some contemplation, some appreciation of things old and beautiful.

What do you think of gallery walls in kids rooms?  Love it?  Or leave this type of display to the grownups?

I adore this idea. In fact, I pinned part of your recent post on the office/guest room redo – the fantastic wall where you put up frames and clamps so the photographer could switch out her pictures over time – because I think this is a perfect way to organize a gallery wall for art and drawings in my son’s room!

Erin, yes! I love it, too. This is probably my most favorite innovative idea of the space. Easy, useful, and practical on a budget!

I’ve been intimidated to do a gallery wall but have a fun eclectic grouping of art that is currently in storage. Do you have any pointers to follow to ensure there is good balance and doesn’t look sloppy?

Hi MWM, I think my best advice would be to put it on the floor and arrange it how you like. Take a picture of it, look at it, and then tweak your grouping. I know it sounds silly, but I often take a picture of rooms or elements when I am designing because I find film highlights flaws much more clearly than the eye. Fun eclectic group = great gallery wall. I think you have nothing to worry about, but please feel free to ask me any other questions!

PS – you may be able to use the instructions in this post when hanging your gallery wall.

The unsourced photos are from Under the Sycamore @ ashleyann photography.com. She has some great DIYs and her new studio space makes me jealous!

Bre, thank you SO SO much for sourcing those images for me. I work really hard to source all of my photos – it takes soooo much time, and I know not all bloggers do it, but I consider design someone’s art, so I really make an effort to label everything. I will fix it right away – thank you for reading!
