Conversation Seating – Four Chairs In The Round

Conversation Seating – Four Chairs In The Round

Our addition is coming along (painting begins today!), and I spent a bit of time yesterday sketching layout ideas in crayon on the floor of it (the tile is not in yet so it is just hardie board).  I quickly discovered that because of the design of the room, there is not a ton of space for seating.  Therefore, I am pretty much relegated to loveseat, coffee table, and chair (maybe two), or a four chair surrounding a coffee table seating arrangement.  (I even thought about this for my living room, too.)  Our addition is not meant for a ton of seating so I am going for a more cozy feel.  You can see from the pictures below that this style looks great from traditional to transitional to modern.

You can see here that these four chairs are all different, but they are upholstered in the same fabric to create congruency.

    I love that look!
    Especially different chairs, same fabric.

Me too, Cathy! I like the eclectic feel of the different fabrics!

I agree with Cathy and also love this idea…especially the fact that all of the chairs are in different sytles with a wide range of round coffee tables OR ottomans OR end tables! Very cohesive.

If I had the room for it, I would DEFINATELY do this in my home. I love the idea of seating geared towards nothing but connecting and catching up with people, no distractions.

I agree, Tiffany. The more I think about it, the more I think this could work for the fam.

I’m so grateful you did a post on this. I’ve got a longish, narrow front room with a fireplace that I’ve thought about doing this with a table in the middle tall enough for game playing, computer work or even extra dining space. Right now the table sits between two love seats that face each other. I was going to just recover or replace them but now I’m back to considering the four chairs. I guess it’s most common to keep the chairs identical since all but one of the photos has all four chairs in the same style and fabric. I think I’m drawn to the idea of having only two the same instead as on the picture fifth from bottom shows. It seems more likely that we could use two identical chairs in other spaces if/when we move than figuring out how to use four again if there’s not a similar space for conversation seating in the new house. I also like that it’s a slightly different take on the idea and adds interest. Thanks again – more for me to think about!

Jessica, I honestly did not notice the difference in the chairs when I chose that picture, I just looked at it and knew that I liked it! I think if the fabric is the same or similar, you can mix however you want! Send me a photo if you end up doing this!

Great examples. My dad has wanted four cozy chairs like this in their living room for, like twenty years, but my mom and I disagreed. I just sent him a link to this post – with my appreciation for his creativity ahead of the curve 🙂 I recognized the fourth photo down (fireplace, moss green walls) as Maria Killam’s. Here’s the link if you’d like to site it. http://www.mariakillam.com/2010/08/bc-home-article-before-and-after.html/

Sarah! I LOVE when my readers solve the mystery of photo sources for me! I spend so much time researching sources for my photos, and it so irritates me when I have to write “source unknown”. Probably more than it should. 😉 But I do so appreciate you pointing that out – I updated it. 🙂

Your Dad was ahead of the curve – whoa!!

This looks great but only works if TV viewing is possible from all fou chairs. Sad but true.

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you can do with a few pics
to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is wonderful blog.
A fantastic read. I will certainly be back.

I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your site.
It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more often.
Did you hire out a designer to create your theme?
    Exceptional work!
