After receiving some emails asking our addition progress, I thought I would update you all!  I am happy to say (happier than you know) that as of yesterday, the room is officially “dried in”.  

You are probably thinking…”Grace, didn’t you guys start this in November?!  It has taken nearly six months to get one room framed and dried in?  Not even finished?”  Well, needless to say, those are my thoughts exactly, it has taken a loooooonnnnngggggg time to get where we are.  To make a long story short, we had a bad contractor, and after piecing some things together, we realized our money was not going where we thought.  Once we found a crew that could finish the job (or at least get it dried in so the elements were not ruining the wood, etc.), they told us the walls were bowing out from bad framing, and basically, they had to take the whole roof off to fix it.  So the roof from the previous contractor was removed, we were left with four framed walls, and we started again.  This is our third home to renovate, we have never had this type of problem, and even though it hurt, I guess you have to chalk it up to living and learning.

So enough of the sad story, let’s try to focus on the positive, which is the room looking great now that we have a new crew (who has done a beautiful job by the way!)

You can see in the photo below where the french door will be on the right.

We chose a steel roof, and I am so happy with how it turned out.  There is nothing like hearing the rain on a steel roof.

As you can see, we nixed the roof windows, or rather, they were nixed for us due to all that happened.  I have to say though, I love the design of the popout, and we did worry about the roof windows being a heat problem in the summer.

There will be a small deck here with three steps up to enter the room from the outside.

We are still planning on the room being a creamy white with beadboard on the ceiling and pretty trim around the windows.

I think with all the windows, and the elevated roof, the room feels bigger than it is.  (about 15 x 18)

Our former back door is here, plus you can see we will be covering up a bathroom window.  I think we are just going to turn it into a small shelf on the bathroom side.

There is kitchen counter space and a lower cabinet underneath that small window to the left of the door.  I would like to try and preserve that so it will be open from the countertop to the ceiling when we take this wall down.  From the left of the old back door to the beginning of where you see the exterior brick will be the opening to our new room.  You will take a step down to enter the room also.

The next step is to  stucco the outside and add trim.  We have never had stucco on a house we owned before, and we were so shocked to see the trim on stucco homes is styrofoam with stucco over it.  Seriously!

As far as the inside of our home goes, the living room ceiling trim detail is complete as of this weekend, and I am so excited to show you!  It looks great!  I am still trying to decide on curtains for that room as you can see.  I am actually really drawn to the horizontal stripe silk, and think it would bring a little drama to the room.  My husband is leaning more towards the arabesque pattern, though we can’t decide which colorway we like the best.  Any thoughts, dear readers?

A few weeks ago, I went to the annual Wisteria warehouse clearance sale and scored a few things for some clients, and something for me!  I LOVE the bone inlaid furniture from Wisteria.  It is usually so beautifully done, and the intricate detail is superb.  Of course, because it is handmade and full of gorgeous detail, it is $$$.  I’ve always thought the white bone inlaid chair from their Rare Birds Collection (which means it is an antique or special find item – not mass produced) was so so pretty, and it looks even better in real life.

Each chair retails for $999 in the store ($700 online??), and when I was at the clearance sale, I saw a pair in the corner of the warehouse.  One was broken and smashed up, and one was perfect.  Out of curiosity, I looked at the tag on the broken one, and it said $999 marked down to $300.  There is no way I was paying $300 for a chair that day, but I just happened to catch a glance at the tag on the good one, and it said $60.  I didn’t even really read the tag, I just grabbed the chair, and ran, ha.  It wasn’t until I got home that I got a good chance to read what the tag said.

Looks like a mismark, woopsies!  But check out how pretty it looks in my living room!

The detail is so lovely.
