22 Jul Addition Update: Drywall & Paint!

In my last addition update, we had finished the exterior, completed the opening between the new room and the kitchen, and mounted the outdoor lighting.  It has been a little over a month now, but drywall is up, and the beadboard ceiling is finished.

You can see here what it looked like when the wood was going up on the ceiling.

We were so excited to see the trim going around the windows, and the crown molding being put into place.  (We are doing picture frame molding underneath each of the windows – I actually just noticed this was missing, woops!  Add that to my to-do list.)

The opening between the kitchen and addition was much more real when the drywall was up.

For the paint color, I went with the trim color in the rest of our house, which is a custom match based on Benjamin Moore’s Decorators White (just a little creamier, not quite as white).  We used a semi gloss, but since it was sprayed, it lost a little of the sheen.  I think it is perfect!

We lived for a few days with all of the windows covered like this.

After a second coat, we waited for the paint to get nice and dry.  I was so excited to see all of the tape come off and for the paint to be scraped away.  The painters were ripping off the tape and began scraping, and then I noticed this.

Do you see the problem?

That gap, argh!  And they were everywhere.  Some were worse than others, and when I mentioned it to the painter, I saw him grimace.  I felt terrible for him to have to tape everything back up, and spray again, but I knew it would bug me.  I would see those little gaps and be irked.  Plus I was reminded of what I always hear from clients/friends who have built a house.  “We hate ___ , but by the time we we were choosing ___ , we were so tired and worn out that we didn’t care anymore.”   

I do not want this to be me!  We have come so far, and I am not going to poop out now!  So he caulked all of them, repainted, scraped the windows, and I removed the twelve million sheets of clear protectant that were on all of those window panes.

And then…I stepped back.

It’s a good feeling!  Our tile is here, and the floor goes in Wednesday!  Hopefully, I will have the next update for you before a month goes by!

P.S.  I cannot imagine building a house!
