Industrial Cafeteria Tables

Industrial Cafeteria Tables

I was talking to a friend yesterday about her recent trip to Round Top and went back and looked at my photos from our trip last year.  (we didn’t make it this spring)  You can read all about it here:

Round Top Day 1 – Collections

Round Top Day 2 – Out With The Old

Round Top Day 3 – Simply Swedish

Round Top Day 4 – The If-Only’s

Round Top Day 5 – A Visit to Royers

P.S.  Round Top is like Brimfield for Southerners.

Then I saw this photo and remembered how neat this table was.  (And I also remembered how big I used to do my watermarks because I couldn’t figure out how to size them.  Blogging = GIANT learning curve for me when it comes to graphic design elements)

Isn’t it so neat?  Of course, I took to the World Wide Web to see if I could find any of these vintage factory/cafeteria tables for our addition.  You can see in the photo below where the dining area will be, and the table needs to be a bit narrow.  When I was measuring and mapping things out, I think I need something 30″ deep or less.

Immediately, I found this one on 1stDibs, but it was sold.  That green makes me very happy.

These old factory tables are all really narrow so that is good.   My research led me to the discovery of a company called Hudson Goods – they make reproduction versions of these tables in any size.  (and also have lots of really neat industrial items)

The table above is $4000, and this one is $3000.  They have a four seater for $2000, too.

The wood tops are reclaimed, and you can bolt them to the floor, or to boards they will send you.  You can see these seats swivel out, but there are other versions where the seats flip out and in.  Like this one from Urban Remains Chicago.  ($3200)

This is not a reproduction, but is the real-deal table from the 1930’s that they have refurbished!  Aren’t they incredible?  You should peruse this site for awhile, I have a feeling I could live in their showroom!

Of course, these are beautiful and wonderful, and also way out of my price range.  Is it silly to hope I will be driving by and find an old, dilapidated table like this for me to revamp?

And then, there is practicality.  Is this practical?  Will kids fall off of the seats?  Will they kick each other when they are older since the table is narrow?  Will this look neat and different, or weird?  After way too long searching, the only thing I found with this type of table in an actual HOUSE was this vacation home in Georgia.  (which is beautiful by the way, you should check it out)  Has anyone ever heard of St. Simon’s?  It looks awesome!

I did find several photos of these types of tables in restaurants and pubs.

And just for fun, Restoration Hardware has a similar kids version.  I think it’s pretty neat.  Is anyone else slightly mesmerized by the big people furniture they morph into Lilliputian size?

So what do you think?  Would you have one of these in your home?  Or am I out of my mind, ha!

Cool tables. Yes, my husband and I use to live in Savannah, GA when we first got married and we went to St. Simon’s for vacation. At the time (about 15 years ago). It was a beautiful quiet little beach town. I remember you could rent bikes and ride them all around. It was a great escape. I would hope it is still that way.

Those tables are amazing! I love their look and size and I think they would be a great space saver. In my limited experience, siblings will find reasons to kick each other no matter how far apart/or close they are. 🙂 I say keep your eyes peeled, you might be able to find a deal!

Elizabeth, ha! That made me laugh, thank you. I am sure you are right. 🙂 Send happy finders dust my way. 😉 G

I think the tables are great-looking. That said, I’m going through a moment of chafing at our own beautiful-but-hard wooden chairs, so I look at this and think “not comfortable”. It’s also maybe not super-flexible (dining room chairs in my house tend to move around a fair amount to make room for more/fewer guests, high chairs, extra seats in the adjacent living room, etc., none of which may be as relevant in your house). But different rooms have different needs, and the look is fantastic.

Erin, all good points and thoughts. Thank you for taking the time to comment! Since we have a dining room with a big farmhouse table, I am not as worried about the ability to pull up chairs. (although I do plan on having hostess chairs at the end) My husband even likes them – it’s just the price. Boo. Keeping my fingers crossed for a find! 🙂 G

The stools reminded me of this kitchen from House Beautiful http://www.housebeautiful.com/kitchens/dream/industrial-kitchen-design-ideas-0213#slide-4 The tables are lovely, albeit expensive, and you lose some flexibility with the fixed positions. It’s hard to determine from a photo how practical/comfortable they are, and whether they would work for children of various sizes. Would look great in your room.

Ellen, oh my word! I had never seen that kitchen before – thank you for sending the link! I LOVE those swivel stools in the bar – GENIUS!!!

Would love for one of these to work in my house! So fabulous for kids…primarily because you don’t have to move chairs around to clean under the table! Might not be the easiest for the littlest ones, but they will learn quick…and they’ll have fun learning if they swivel! I say go for it!

Alex, thanks! Yes, I’m thinking the kids would love it. 🙂 G

Those are so fun! Chairs can be so cluttery looking, especially Bc kids don’t staighten them that well. This would solve that problem.

Sarah, ah, you are so right! Okay I’m convinced, now where to find it?? The search begins!

Saw this on Dallas Craigslist: http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/fuo/3819991644.html
Not nearly as awesome as the ones you posted, but perhaps it has potential if you made some alterations??

I know this is an older post, but I stumbled across it in my search for antique cafeteria tables after I saw (and fell hard for) this one at World Market: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/galvin+cafeteria+table.do – in comparison, it is definitely more budget-conscious than larger ones. Good luck – I love the idea, too!

Holy cow, Terry!!! I hadn’t seen this! Great find, thank you so much for posting it!

LOVE LOVE LOVE I found World market has one. Want it sooo bad! here it is..
    http://www.worldmarket.com/product/galvin+cafeteria+table.do?from=Search&cx=0

but the issue with this is it’s only 55inches long and it’s a bit tight with two adults next to each other. I am willing to overcome that fot the few times we have 4-6 people since there is only three of us, but hubby isn’t going for it.
My biggest love about this one over others is the seats are attached and they Swivle! so not only do they swing out to sit on the seat top spin. SO nice to not have chairs to move to mop and easy to get in and out of for my parents.

Now if I could only find one in 60″ long!

Hi Robin, yeah, I see your point…I’m not sure where you live, but if it were me looking for one, I would be stalking CraigsList. Search for “cafeteria table” or “lunchroom table”. Maybe even split it into “lunch room table” or use “lunch table”. I searched for forever on my CL, and nothing came up until after I bought the one I have (of course). It was a neat one though it was missing a seat. So it’s possible! I would also keep my eye out at flea markets and antique shows. I also saw one at Round Top in Texas a couple of years ago. I hope that helps, and I hope you find one you love! xo, G
