Want This Room, Wear This Room No. 1

Today I’m excited to introduce a new series called “Want This Room, Wear This Room”.  I have always been interested in the tie between fashion and design, and the question, “Does Fashion inspire Design?” Or vice versa?  I think it probably works both ways.  For example, in my own client work, there have been times when I have used the fashion world as inspiration for a space.  And there have been times when a room I love dictated my outfit.

I thought it might be fun to illustrate this concept by picking a space that inspires me and show you items that will help you recreate this look literally and stylistically.

First up, “Want This Room”.

OB-want #1

Black Chest   /  Lamp  /  Rug  /  Chandelier  /  Bedding  /  Fringe Pillow  /  Chalkboard

What I really love about this space is how rich it feels, yet it is also really simple.  The classic black and white bedding sets off the jewel tone of the rug, and the deep wall color and molding.  I like how the chalkboard serves as a makeshift headboard, and the chandelier and lamps bring in some sparkle.  Also, how pretty is that fringe trim pillow in the board above?  I think I need a couple of those for my window seat!

Wear This Room No. 1

Lace Shell & Skirt  /  Earrings  /  Black Bow Loafers  /  Necklace  /  Tulle Skirt  /  Suede Ankle Strap Shoes  /

Black Ribbon Booties  /  Striped Sweater

The “Wear This Room” plan for this space was pretty fun for me to put together, I must admit.  : )  I especially love those loafers and the booties with the ribbon!  I find that focusing on color combinations I admire in a space truly helps me put outfits together.  Conceptually, it just makes more sense to me.  Looking at style through a design lens enables me to be more put together, I think.

I’m interested to hear your perspective on this…

Do you think your fashion sense influences your design choices for your home?  Or are you more of a design person whose interior decisions reflect in your personal style?  Or perhaps you are not sure, but thinking about it this way may be helpful for you?

I would love to hear from you in the comments!

Grace, I never comment on blogs, but that tulle skirt is just my style and my favorite color. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it was for curvier gals like me. Now I know what I will be wearing to my holiday parties! Thank you.

Oh Jane, I am so happy you found something you like! The fact that it is your favorite color is just icing on the cake. 😉 Enjoy! xo

I think I see trends in design first and then see it in fashion. That could be because I am not much of a fashion person and follow interior design much more closely. I like your idea.

Susan, ha, me too! But I do think fashion inspires my schemes at times. Thank you for taking the time to comment! G

Completely agree with this! Several years ago I was gifted the most beautiful design book “The Well Dressed Home” by Annette Tatum. Hope you will check it out. it’s beautifully done and addresses this exact discussion!

Love the combining of fashion and interior design. I definitely think one influences the other with me. Looking forward to seeing more in this series.

Oh I definitely notice a tie between my personal style and decor style. In both I tend to be drawn to a somewhat masculine look with a few touches of feminine glam. And speaking of glam – I think i”m in love with that rug and those earrings. Need!

Hi Arielle, I think we have a similar style, though I have noticed that since I have had girls, I have “girled” my style up a little bit. Thank you for commenting! xo
