Old Movie Homes: High Society

I grew up watching old movies.  In fact, that was all we watched.  Movies popular in  my childhood years I know nothing about.  E.T.?  I know it stands for extra terrestrial, and that’s about it.  Oh, and the little alien guy says “Call Home” at some point?

Sometimes I impress those older than me with my knowledge of old movies and musicals, leading ladies and men.  The truth is, I love them.  They get their point across without being too in your face.  Women could be beautiful and sexy and elegant and strong and heartfelt, without having to be “fierce”.  (Seriously, call me old-fashioned, but I loathe that term.)

But I digress…I love old movies – the fashions, and of course, the homes.  One of my favorites is the 1956 musical, High Society.  An incredibly talented cast including Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and Celeste Holm, come together to create this remake of “The Philadelphia Story”.  The story is good, Grace Kelly is stunning, but the home, oh the home!  (not a real home, but sets at the MGM Studios – one can pretend)

The room above is my favorite room in the house.  Besides being one of my favorite colors, those chinoiserie panels are to die for, and the chippendale chairs, rattan furniture, and patterned floor are all design classics.

You can see the wallpaper a bit closer here.

The library is beautiful with all of those books, but check out the shape of that chair Bing Crosby is sitting in!  I so love upholstery with interesting shapes; nowadays, the only way to find this is to go vintage.

The pool and pool house are stunning!  Not to mention, I love love Grace Kelly’s swimsuit and cover-up, and I would wear them poolside incessantly if something like this were still available.

Check out the shape of the chaise, and did you notice the trim detail in the cushion above?

Haha Grace, it’s “ET phone home”. Saw High Society many years ago. I was so young I never realized how beautiful the house was. Will have to watch again!

We are such kindred spirits… I’m convinced I was born in the wrong generation! I am a HUGE fan of Turner Classic Movies, and that’s about all I like to watch these days. There was such elegance, glamour, and a sense of propriety that has simply been lost. And this movie (one of my favorites)is no exception!

GlamPad, I hear ya. Me too. I LOVE TCM also, not to mention classic TV – I Love Lucy, Petticoat Junction, Dick Van Dyke Show, etc. Glad to know I’m not the only one. 🙂

I ADORE old movies!! I definitely agree with everything you said about the merits of classic films. They really just don’t make them like they used to anymore…Glad to find I’m not the only “youngin” to obsess over these great movies! P.S. Grace Kelly is my jam.

Carrie, yes! So fun to find others who love these old films like I do. Grace Kelly is the epitome of “lady”! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, G

    Hello Sister from another Mister.
    I watch old movies all.of.the.time.
I love everything about them….the clothes, hairdos, decor, music, and I agree, the story lines are the very best!
I have not seen this movie in years. Need to check it out!
