Lighting & Color

I recently saw the above image of a bachelorette pad Erin Gates designed that was featured in High Gloss Magazine.  I was instantly drawn to it – the pale pink sofa (I’m not a big pink person, but I think a barely-there-pink is beautiful), the black accents, and the pale grey blue walls.  It comes together and looks very pleasant.  I would like to sit down here.

Curious to see more of the room, I googled it.  To my sadness, that lovely petal pink turned into bubble gum??

And then lavender??

It makes you wonder…how many spaces that you see in magazines would you recognize in real life?  Isn’t it funny how different this room looks in each photo? I get a different vibe from each color shade.  Photoshop works wonders for rooms too, I imagine.  I ponder sometimes where all the electrical outlets are in rooms when I look at magazines.  Understandably, outlets are not pretty, but sometimes a snippet of real life in beautiful interior images would be appreciated.

Frequently, I am left thinking, “Those lamps are cool, I wonder where they are plugged in?”

Does anyone else think these things?  Bueller?

I think the same things. Plus, it’s so easy to fall in love with a color on TV or in a magazine and then you get it home, and it’s like, “what is this?” It’s so important to get it home and try a sample on the walls first. The first picture is amazing!

Sharon, absolutely!! I never buy a paint color from just seeing it online or in a magazine, I always test it first. I’ve had a few too many gray-that-turned-purple incidents. 😉 G

Super interesting observation. I noticed this with one of my fave offices of all time – that of Jenna Lyons. In some pictures her desk looks coral, in some it looks red, and in some it looks hot pink! Love her space in any shade though, but in the room above I agree that it looks best in the first pic!

Tiffany, isn’t that funny? I’m going to have to google her office now. 🙂 xoxo, G

This is SO true! I am always conscious of my plugs and cables when I’m taking interior shots, and wondering how come no-one else seems to have them. It’s funny how we feel the need to hide pieces of our (and everyone elses!) real life in order to make it look perfect. Real life isn’t styled, I always say… 🙂

Amy, I’m so with you! I always think that about ac/heating grates, too! Where are they? SHOW US!! 😉 Ha! I can tell you, my real life is in no way, shape, or form, “styled”. 😉 G
