Gilt Angel Wings (aka my barbeque wings)

Have you seen pairs of gilt angel wings popping up in your local antique stores and other home decor shops?  (I’ve spotted them in Round Top before, too)  Some are original (taken from old churches and such), but most are reproductions.  I bought an old pair about three years ago for sixty dollars, and my husband surmised I had officially lost my mind.  I thought they were neat, though I have yet to find the perfect way to display them.  (these could go real cheesy real fast, ya know what I’m sayin’?)

Our wings quickly earned the name “barbeque wings” because after a few days in our house, it really did start to smell like a BBQ restaurant around here.   (they have since lost the strong odor, thank goodness!)

But I felt somewhat justified when my friend Kat sent me a link yesterday to Restoration Hardware’s reproduction gilt angel wings!

Me:  See?!  Even Restoration Hardware thinks they are cool!

Husband:  I bet theirs don’t smell like barbeque.

Me:  But you LOVE barbeque!

They have a large pair (shown above) that stands about five feet tall, and a small two foot pair (seen below).  You can purchase them in the gilt gold or a pretty pewter color.

Of course, I don’t think these have to be used solely in a kids room.

I really like how they are utilized here.  Inverted in a frame is a smart way to use these and make them a little less pretentious.

Even though the wings are not displayed in my home as of yet, I have still used them for something.  When Kat was taking my youngest daughter’s newborn pictures, we put her in between them, and it looked pretty cute.   Gotta love last minute prop ideas!

Of course, if these wings are a little much for you in general, you could always just get the pants.

I have a plaster angel (cherub) that I found a few years ago at a thrift store. I love it, but haven’t found a place yet to display it in my home. (Someday…) I think the gilt angel wings can make such a statement. Especially in an unexpected space like the bathroom or kitchen.

Maybe you could display your angel wings at Christmas time! Or if they don’t work in your place … maybe I could borrow them for Christmas at my place! I absolutely LOVE that RESTORATION HARDWARE is selling them and you already had some. Goes to show you must be a trend-setter!

Snort, the pants! I had a tee shirt with angel wings on the back about 8 years ago. For some reason I wore it a lot when I was angry at a boy after we broke up. But oh my goodness, LOVE the prop idea with the newborn shots! She was fresh from heaven – very apt.

Julie, ha! That made me laugh! How appropriate. 😉

And yes, she was definitely fresh from heaven, and she is a complete sweetheart! She is definitely the treasured baby of the family. 😉 G
