One Room Challenge Fall 2016 – Week 2 – The Master Bedroom Plan

One Room Challenge Fall 2016 – Week 2 – The Master Bedroom Plan

As I told you last week, for this season’s One Room Challenge, I am giving our Master Bedroom a makeover.  (finally!)

We moved into our home nearly six years ago (hard to believe!), and we have not done very much to this room, although it has gone through a couple of different looks from all white to grasscloth covered walls, plus a couple of bed changes through the years.

I really enjoy designing Master bedrooms for clients as it is very satisfying.  I know people work so hard and have full days, and I  work with a lot of families, so it is important to me to create a retreat for them.  I want my clients to walk in and feel comforted and peaceful.  I think that way with all of the rooms I design of course, and I desire to deliver that feeling in every space I craft, but a Master Bedroom is a very personal space.  Therefore, it is more of an intimate process which I relish.  Through all of this planning, it has been fun to work on something just for us, as sometimes I feel we have a bit of a “cobbler’s children have no shoes” issue.  : )

My husband and I have slightly different views on how we want our bedroom to look.  He wants a more dark, cozy space, while I prefer a mostly white, airy feel.  After exchanging opinions and visions of how everything should come together, I finally feel we have arrived at a good mix of feminine and masculine and a pleasant combination of our desires.

So here’s the plan!  *I have included a Source List at the end of this post*

The main jumping off point for the space was this beautiful wallpaper by Ellie Cashman.  I think her work is so unique, and if there is anything I love, it is a large scale black floral!  I thought this would be fantastic on the ceiling, and my husband really liked the idea of looking up at it.  There is something very calming about the design.  We ordered several samples, and settled on the 200% (i.e. VERY LARGE scaled) Saturated (more sharp/colorful) version of her Dark Floral wallpaper.  Mind you, this wallpaper ships from the Netherlands, and I ordered it on a Tuesday, and it was on my front doorstep (in Texas) on Friday!  Super impressive!

My favorite parts of the wallpaper are the giant flowers (their detail!), and the varying shades of green on the leaves.  The hues range from dark and moody to springlike.

One of the biggest changes in the room will be painting the trim!  The change from creamy white to black was not something I was super jazzed about at first.  But my husband felt so strongly that it would go well with the direction of the room that I finally conceded.  I loved the idea of the black, but it did not totally feel like “us” at first.

We painted several samples of varying shades of black, but none of them had the right depth to me.  I had a sample of Farrow & Ball’s Black Blue on hand, and it ended up being just right.  It is black, but not too deep, and has just enough midnight blue in it to hold some depth.  It’s gorgeous!  (and my husband has a great eye ; )  )

The salvage doors I bought will be getting a fresh coat of paint in Black Blue, plus I have some definite plans for the hardware.

This sad little closet opening is getting a makeover as is the closet space.  We are replacing the old narrow door with the salvage yard double doors, and centering the opening on the wall. Replacing the floor in the closet is a major bullet point, too.  This will be a MAJOR improvement as the floor in the closet is the 100-year-old sub floor that gives your feet splinters. Plus when you open the closet door, it extends deeply to the left so the space is awkward and difficult to use efficiently.  Widening the door will help so much.

An element I am VERY excited about using is this GORGEOUS vintage Kindel dresser from the Collected Eclectic Home.  Along with their customer service being great, this girl has some amazing finds!  The CEH has become a reliable resource for myself and my clients.  I’m adding a marble top to this beauty, and I think it will be fantastic!  Follow the CEH’s Instagram to snag Diana’s pieces as soon as they are posted – they go fast!

Like I mentioned last week, I’m reupholstering this porter chair I found at an estate sale.

I’m going to man it up a bit by using a pinstripe suiting fabric.

We are getting some shades from The Shade Store for the windows in a grey raw silk fabric, and I am bringing in the green hues of the wallpaper through pillows and an enlarged sentimental photo of ours.  I also have a beloved collection of 12 antique botanicals similar to these (posted below) that will tie in the muted green tones.

The first Valentines Day we lived in our home, my husband gave me a card that sent me on a little hunt to the backyard.  On an old stump covered in vines, my husband carved our initials.  I thought it was so sweet, and it really touched my heart that he had thought of it.  I’m blowing up the photo, and I plan on using an acrylic frame like the one I used in my boys room.

We have been in dire need of a floor mirror, so I found this one, and the measurements fit perfectly.  I like that it is simple, but it still has some detail. Also, floor mirrors are price-Y!  I liked the looks for the price on the one we chose.

I found a pretty little Kittinger desk long ago at one of my favorite vintage haunts in Dallas, Antique Moderne.  We paired it with a vintage modern looking Kai Kristiansen chair.  The chair needs an upholstery makeover, but I think I have an idea of the direction I am going.  I envision some sort of tweed fabric to keep in line with the chair’s Danish mid-century roots, plus incorporating some leather.

I found a pair of wheat tole lamps at Round Top several years ago that will sit atop the desk.

My husband is VERY into soft, fluffy rugs, especially in the bedroom.  Therefore, flokati was the only way to go.  I really like the tassel details on this rug.

The bed is obviously a major factor in a Master Bedroom, and boy, have we had a difficult time finding the right one!  The bed will be in front of the windows so we don’t want it to be too tall or too obstructive.  We considered the bed pictured below, but in the end, we felt it would be too much wood in the room.  It also seemed too flowery, and I am making a concentrated effort to balance the floral wallpaper with clean, more masculine lines in the furniture and decor.

We eventually settled on this brass chippendale headboard to tie in the handles on the dresser, plus we liked that it was open so the windows are more visible.

Once you have a plan, things really start moving, and I am pleased so far with how the room is going!  Thank you for following along, and please follow me on Instagram for more updates on this project and others!

Hi Shelley, thank you! I’m pumped about the porter chair, too. Kent wasn’t super sure about the pinstripe suiting fabric, but I told him to trust me, and fingers crossed, he is happy with it when it is done! 🙂 xo

I really like wallpaper on a ceiling. Sounds like hard work! I really like those two lamps. The open headboard in front of the window is a great idea! I like your plan to enlarge the treetrunk photo. A master bedroom needs something romantic!

Hi Lucille, wallpapering the ceiling is definitely not easy, but I’m not going to wallpaper it myself this time. After a month of my neck hurting after last time :), I decided it was better to hire this job out! Thanks for commenting on the tree photo – that is one of my favorite elements, and I totally agree about the need for a romantic element in the bedroom! The ceiling will add a lot of ambiance too, I think. xo, G
